Benthic Habitat Mapping NCCOS is producing benthic/seafloor habitat maps to help coastal managers assess, protect, and preserve the condition of coastal ocean ecosystems. We have developed maps and related products (e.g., imagery, publications) for areas in the Pacific and Atlantic, including the Caribbean. Benthic community composition, topographic relief, areal extent, and temporal stability are critical factors that contribute to the value of a given marine habitat. With the emergence of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as a priority management tool for protecting coral reef resources, knowledge of these essential habitat components is paramount.

The dataset describes the spatial distribution of benthic habitats on the insular shelf south of St. Thomas and St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. These benthic habitats include: (1) Coral Reef Colonized with Live Coral, (2) Pavement Colonized with Live Coral, (3) Rhodoliths with Macroalgae, (4) Rhodoliths with Macroalgae and Bare Sand, and (5) Bare Sand. The marine benthic habitats in Martin County were mapped using a combined technique approach similar to other southeast Florida counties,.The area of interest covered approximately km 2 of seafloor from shore to the 30 m depth contour. Image-based analyses in deeper water were not useful due to poor water clarity; therefore, a high resolution (4 m) LIDAR.

Minerals Management Service. Gulf of Mexico OCS Region.;]. This is a narrative report of a study, with the following objectives: 1) to map and inventory seagrass beds and habitats formed by sessile invertebrates along Florida's southwest coast, within Florida Bay, and along the north side of the Florida Keys to Dry Tortugas, using a combination of aerial photography and shipboard ground truthing; and 2) to determine the seasonal growth period and seaward extent of.

Main sources of data used to depict benthic distribution and seasonality for this data layer are: 1) Predictive habitat suitability models for deep sea corals from NOAA; 2) deep sea coral survey data from NOAA; 3) benthic habitat survey data from Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), and Rookery Bay National.

Study site locations and historical distribution of Halophila decipiens. The shaded area in the inset panel shows the extent of H.

decipiens habitat on the west Florida shelf. The area of detail in the small panel is expanded in the bottom panel to show the location of our three sampling stations along a depth transect on the west Florida by: The objectives of the current study were (1) to perform comprehensive mapping of macro benthic habitat distributions in Clam Bay, (2) to analyze macro benthic habitat compositions relative to Southwest Florida nearshore benthic habitat study book.

Macroalgae, the primary habitat-forming species in the nearshore, disappeared from the region. It was hypothesized that this mortality event was caused by a reduction in benthic light availability. The Coastal Marine Ecosystem of South Florida, United States Coastal bays have three main benthic habitat types: seagrass beds, bare unconsolidated substrates, and oolitic a case study for.

A highly detailed digitized map depicts 22 benthic habitats in km2 of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Dominant are a seagrass/lime-mud zone (map area %) throughout Hawk Channel and seagrass/carbonate-sand (%) and bare carbonate-sand (%) zones on the outer shelf and in The Quicksands.

A lime-mud/seagrass–covered muddy carbonate-sand zone. Large scale ecosystem level studies of nearshore species and habitats most affected by the spill completed infound evidence of long-term spill effects among nearshore species dependent on a nearshore food web where benthic invertebrates transfer primary production to upper level consumers such as sea otters and sea ducks.

Surficial geology and benthic habitat of the German Bank seabed, Scotian Shelf, Canada To provide the scientific context for management of a newly opened scallop fishing ground, surficial geology and benthic habitats were mapped on German Bank on the southern Scotian Shelf off Atlantic Canada.

This short webinar provides a brief overview of what benthic habitats are and why they are critical to the economic and environmental health of the coast. The case study profiles an effort in California’s Humboldt Bay and Eel River estuary that helped catalyze restoration efforts and create new partnerships.

The project “EcoHAB: Karenia Nutrient Dynamics in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico” (NOAA EcoHAB grant NA06NOS) was designed to simultaneously quantify a wide variety of nutrient sources which can support the nearly annual blooms of Karenia brevis in the estuarine and coastal waters of west central Florida.

Estuarine outflows and water column stocks of nutrients have been previously. Benthic Ecosystems map and pie chart: The benthic map shows 22 types of habitats identified from the northern Florida Keys to The Quicksands (from Lidz et al., ).The habitats were derived from field observation, prior knowledge, and interpreted aerial photomosaics.

Three are terrestrial, including a roads/airports map unit. Nearshore estuarine habitats are thought to provide “essential” benthic juveniles live in estuaries, and adults occur on offshore reefs (Study sites in southwest Florida, USA.
