Benthic Habitat Mapping NCCOS is producing benthic/seafloor habitat maps to help coastal managers assess, protect, and preserve the condition of coastal ocean ecosystems. We have developed maps and related products (e.g., imagery, publications) for areas in the Pacific and Atlantic, including the Caribbean. Benthic community composition, topographic relief, areal extent, and temporal stability are critical factors that contribute to the value of a given marine habitat. With the emergence of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as a priority management tool for protecting coral reef resources, knowledge of these essential habitat components is paramount.
The dataset describes the spatial distribution of benthic habitats on the insular shelf south of St. Thomas and St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. These benthic habitats include: (1) Coral Reef Colonized with Live Coral, (2) Pavement Colonized with Live Coral, (3) Rhodoliths with Macroalgae, (4) Rhodoliths with Macroalgae and Bare Sand, and (5) Bare Sand.
